  • What’s the deal with asbestos?
Asbestos was commonly used in spray on paint used for ceiling texture in the 1950s, 60s and 70s before it was widely know how dangerous it is. Although it was banned in 1976 suppliers were legally allowed to sell their back stock up until 1990. That’s why you typically need a hazmat test on any ceilings textured before 1990.
  • Why do I not need to Hazmat test using the Back to Flat method?
Asbestos is only dangerous when it is disturbed at which point it can release toxic asbestos dust into the air. If inhaled, asbestos dust can lead to serious health issues. Thankfully, asbestos doesn’t pose any health risk as long as it’s left completely intact. At Back to Flat we bury the potentially asbestos containing texture with plaster which eliminates the danger of it getting airborne during the plastering process. This also gives you the peace of mind in knowing that any asbestos that may be present is safely buried and less prone to being disturbed by knocks.
